About John Dempsey
Originally from the West of Scotland, I've lived most of my life on the East Coast of the country. My wife and daughters are East Coasters, and having lived here for the past seventeen years, I very much consider it my home. I first came to Montrose in 1970, fell in love with the area immediately and married a local girl three years later.
It was such a contrast coming from the tenements of Glasgow, although I was fortunate enough to be brought up near one of the most beautiful places in the world, Loch Lomond.... I visit the area regularly as I still have strong links with family and friends who live in the west. . I've lived around most of the northeast of Scotland, but eventually settled in Montrose in the late 1980s.
Since returning to Montrose, I have grown in my love of this part of the world, and I consider it a privilege to be living here. I am captivated by the place, people, beaches, history, architecture and the appeal of the contrasting surrounding areas. Playing golf is also a bonus.
My wife June and I live on the edge of the Montrose Basin. The Basin is one of my favourite places in the world. I just love returning to it, even when I’ve been away for the briefest of spells.
It is here I find my space and tranquility, living on the edge of the countryside, yet, I am only ten minutes walk from the town centre which is steeped in a most interesting unique history.
From Autumn to Spring I love the magic of wakening up to the sound of the pinkfoot goose, flying in thousands over my house. Likewise, I am rapt by the unpolluted smell and perpetual freshness of the sea air as it catches my breath on a cold winter’s day. The land is so flat here that cycling and walking are pleasures to be enjoyed and encouraged.
Creating this Website adds to my knowledge of Montrose and the surrounding areas. I always wanted to do this, but I never had the time.
My family, friends, and their friends, are also enthusiastic, so I am enjoying listening to their views, while gaining a new appreciation of the community - which I hope to share through this new local community website.
I look forward to hearing your anecdotes - whether it be memories of the Montrose area… or even why my views are sometimes all wrong - anything in fact you think is worthy of note.
